Medical School Pathways for Different Students

For secondary school graduates

Completed WAEC, NECO or another recognized secondary school qualification? Explore medical education pathways designed for eligible school leavers, including longer undergraduate-entry routes and preparatory programs. Requirements differ by university, and an assessment of your subjects, grades and English proficiency is essential.

For university graduates

Already earned a bachelor’s degree? Depending on your academic background and the institution’s requirements, a four-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program may be an option. We help you compare prerequisite subjects, entrance assessments, English-language requirements, program structure and cost.

For existing medical graduates

Some institutions describe MBBS-to-MD pathways. These are specialized options and are not interchangeable with a standard MD program. LQES can help you request up-to-date eligibility and program details before applying.

Compare More Than Tuition

Choosing a medical school requires more than comparing headline prices. Our advisers encourage students and families to consider:

  • Academic prerequisites and language requirements
  • Program duration, curriculum and preparatory options
  • Tuition, administrative fees, living costs and scholarship conditions
  • Location and availability of clinical training placements
  • Recognition, accreditation and eligibility for the licensing pathway relevant to the student’s intended country of practice
  • Application deadlines, intake dates and documentation requirements
Note: Fees and scholarship figures are indicative and may change. Scholarships, grants, loans and eligibility are not guaranteed. Students should request an official, current university quotation before making financial commitments.

From Medical Education to Medical Practice

Interested in practicing in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada or Europe? Licensing and residency pathways have country-specific requirements. For example, the USMLE and PLAB are examinations associated with particular routes, but neither university admission nor graduation guarantees licensing, residency placement or employment. Verify current regulator and school eligibility requirements for your intended destination.
