A Bilingual Medical Education

English

Years 1–2 · Preclinical Sciences

The first two years of the program are taught entirely in English on the Hamburg campus. The curriculum covers the foundational medical sciences — anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, and pharmacology — using small-group instruction and modern simulation technology.

No German language skills are required for admission. Free German classes are offered on campus to prepare students for the clinical phase.

German

Years 3–6 · Clinical Training

From the third year onward, clinical training is conducted in German at UMCH's network of teaching hospitals across Germany. Students are integrated into everyday clinical practice, working directly with patients under physician supervision.

This bilingual structure ensures graduates are prepared for the German healthcare system while maintaining eligibility for international licensing pathways.

The 6-Year Program Structure

01

Preclinical Foundations

Years 1–2 on the Hamburg campus. English-language instruction in the core medical sciences, with small-group learning and early exposure to clinical skills through simulation labs.

02

Clinical Integration

Years 3–5. German-language clinical rotations at teaching hospitals across Germany. Students rotate through internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and psychiatry, with direct patient contact from the start.

03

Final Year & Licensing

Year 6. Advanced clinical electives and preparation for the German medical licensing exam (Approbation). Graduates receive a degree recognized across the EU, UK, US, and Canada.

Clinical Training Across Germany

UMCH's clinical network is one of the broadest in German medical education. Students can choose from over 30 teaching hospitals and more than 100 teaching practices, gaining practical experience in diverse clinical environments — from large university hospitals to regional care centers.

The annual Teaching Hospital Day connects students directly with hospital teams, allowing them to explore placement options and understand what each site offers. This early integration into clinical practice is a defining feature of the UMCH model.

The university received the German Medical Award 2025 for outstanding health communication, recognizing its exemplary nationwide clinical network.
